History of Centre

FSI “Almazov Federal Heart, Blood and Endocrinology Centre” (before FSI “SRI of Cardiology named after V.A. Almazov”)

Scientific Research Institute of Cardiology was founded in 1980. The necessity of its foundation appeared in the 70th and was caused by the growth of morbidity, death and disability of population in view of blood circulation system diseases. To solve the problem of cardiovascular diseases E.I. Chazov initiated the creation of a special cardiologic service. In 1977 in accordance with decree of the Council of Ministers of USSR together with the first Cardiologic institution in Moscow, republican SRI of Cardiology appeared there. In Leningrad SRI was created as a Cardiologic Institution of RSFSR. The initiative of its creation belonged to professor V.A.Almazov, the head of therapy department faculty of the 1st LMU named after I.P. Pavlov. With assistance of the city Institution was provided with cardio-rheumatologic dispensary and hospital for 300 beds and given funds for reconstruction. There was set a challenge of improvement and creation of methods of diagnostics, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases to lower morbidity and death rate, to improve the health of population. A remote diagnostic center was created, where specialists analyzed electrocardiograms, transferred by phone lines, thousands of the citizens were consulted in consultative-clinical department of the center.

For the scientific-clinical research in SRI of Cardiology there were organized division of arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease, emergency cardiac care and intensive care. Having the new clinical base highly-qualified doctors and scientific researchers during the first years after the opening of the Institution have been accomplished complicated fundamental and applied scientific-research works, the collective of like-minded people was formed and the base of new scientific-clinical school was built up. Since the foundation of the university the researches of national medical technical samples was begun. Thus, in 1983, in a lab of clinical physiology of blood circulation, the first domestic portable monitoring device was invented. In the end of the 80th the Institution became a co-executor at the creation of the portable electrocardiograph “Gnom”, resuscitation systems “Trevoga B-4” and “Cardiocomplex-5”. The methodology of remote clinical consults was developed as well as remote diagnostic center for mass assessment in collectives.

The new level of medical care is connected with creation of the cardiac surgery unit in 1987.     The Institution was given for rent some departments of city hospital №4 and angiography device. The creation of modern center of cardio surgery was supported by CCB “Rubin”, Leningrad Metal Factory and other enterprises of the city. Due to their help the first surgery under assisted blood circulation was successfully performed in 1988. Since that time more then 5000 such surgeries were made.

In 1991 the organization structure of the Institution was improved. At the initiative of V.A.Almazov for the acceleration of the results of scientific researcher implementation into the clinical practice scientific and medical subdivisions were united into scientific-research departments (SRD).

In 2004 the Institute obtained the permit of the Higher Certifying Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation to organize the council of doctors of defense doctoral and candidate's thesis of the specialty cardiology. In July 2, 2004 the order of organization this council was signed and the first thesis was done successfully.

From 2001 and till the present moment the scientific-research center of cardiology has been headed by the professor Evgeniy Shlyakhto, the leaner and the follower of Almazov. In 2002 the institute was named after its founder V.A.Almazov.

In the view of enlargement of the additional scientific-research courses and the widening of  scientific and technical opportunities and according to the order Federal Agency of Health and social development №942 from 10.11.2006  the institute was given a new name – Almazov Federal Heart, Blood and Endocrinology Centre.

Today Center of Almazov is one of the leading centers of rending  highly qualified  cardiologic and cardiosurgical support, realization of scientific basic and applied researches, training for scientific manpower, raising the level of doctor's skill.
In the 80th it was evident that the intensive development was not possible because of limited territory. In 1987 the designing was begun and in July of 1988 the building of up-to-date polyclinic complex containing 480 beds with polyclinic department with 360 visits per one shift. The building should have been finished by 1992 but it was stopped on 15 years because of lack of financial support. A new wave in the building of this complex began after his inclusion in the priority list of the president of Russian Federation Putin connected with the preparations for tercentenary celebration of St-Petersburg foundation.
The 1st startup complex of SRI of cardiology clinical building was opened in September 1, 2006 with the clinic of 360 premises, worked per 2 shifts and having the largest haemotransfusion station in St-Petersburg (more than 6000 litre per year).

The new building will provide broaden options of highly-qualified cardio and surgical care for the thousands of people of north-west region of Russia.

Since February Almazov Federal Heart, Blood and Endocrinology Centre is headed by Federal Agency of High-Tech Medical Care (Rosmedtechnology).

First neurosurgical operations were made in a new surgical box of the Centre clinic- polyclinic complex on May 25, 2009. The whole complex was put into operation on June 25, 2009.

December 4, 2007 the Government order № 1743-r about Federal perinatal centers creation in 2008-2010 appeared. On June 8, 2008 the construction of Perinatal centre was begun.
