Vladimir Andreevich Almazov (1931- 2001)

   An extraordinary Russian cardiologist. Graduated the 1st medical university of Leningrad n.a. I.P.Pavlov. Doctor of medical sciences (1966), professor, member of the Russian Academy of medical sciences (1995).
    Within the 47 years of work at St.-Petersburg state medical university (former 1st medical university of Leningrad) n.a. I.P.Pavlov. V.A.Almazov has significantly contributed to training of high-qualified medical human resources. The clinic of the chair of departmental therapy which he had been in charge of, has developed as a multidiscipline healing institution, including the therapy. cardiology, endocrinology and hematology units, intensive care units. V.A.Almazov gave a grounding to scientific cardiology school which Institute for scientific research in cardiology of Ministry of Health of Russian Federation in 1980 was based on.
    Being the head of institute from its foundation V.A.Almazov paid great attention to the St.-Petersburg and North-West region of Russia cardiology service organization’s self-improvement, cardiologists qualification upgrade and the quality of cardiological administration. During several years he was the chairman of the topical scientific cardiology Centre of Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and from 1997 till 1999 – the chairman of Cardiology Section of the Board of Academics in the Ministry of Health.
    V.A.Almazov’s particular merit in the medical care to the patients with cardiovascular diseases improvement area was making inside the institute of cardiology one whole centre which gives not only therapeutic, but surgical care to the patients.
    V.A.Almazov has published more than 300 tractates which includes 25 monographies and manuals about different branches of the internal medicine. V.A.Almazov’s and his students’ most relevant works are dedicated to the arterial hypertension problems and ischemic heart disease. 60 master’s  and 25 doctoral dissertation’s were defended under his guidance. In 1998 V.A.Almazov was awarded the title “Honored worker of science of Russian Federation”. In 1996 international biography centre (Cambridge) awarded him a medal and a diploma “For outstanding service in medicine of the XX century”.
